James N. Gregory, _American Exodus: The Dust Bowl Migration and Okie Culture in California (Oxford University Press, 1989). Here's a book that speaks directly to the ongoing discussion of the role of music in creating/maintaining the language of a subculture. There is an entire section of the book devoted to illustrating how country music represented the Okie culture, with specific mentions of Woody Guthrie and Jack Guthrie (his cousin), Merle Haggard, Gene Autry, Jimmie Rodgers, Paul Westmoreland, and Bob Wills. As the title suggests, this is a book that's more about the actual migration and Okie identity, but I thought its section on country music was worth mentioning. I was assigned this book in an undergraduate course entitled "The American West." David Leventhal University of Tennessee, Knoxville
